Black Crows.

I remember picking this up on cassette back when it was released and going home sticking it in the tape deck and not realising what a gem I had just purchased being floored by what I heard coming from the speakers, back in 1990 there wasn't a whole lot of new bands coming out doing this kinda Cream/Нendrix type of stuff and if they were then not particularly well.
The other great blues rock album released that year was The Black Crowes debut which Burning Tree singer/guitarist Marc Ford went on to play with later. But this album is still in my top ten debut albums of all time,it is a classic from start to finish, what a shame they didn't make a follow up at that time,Marc Ford's first solo abum Weary And Wired is a strong indication that this band could have gone on to great things as it features the same line up of Doni Gray and Mark Dutton.Largely ignored by the public on it's release but garnered some favourable reviews among the rock press this is an album you shoud hear.
This is the RockCandy reissue of this damn fine album a real classic,it has great sleevenotes and 4 live tracks tacked on the end which make me regret never getting the chance to see this band live as they sound great, raw and full of urgency.

Burning Tree was a rock power trio from Los Angeles, California. The band performed from the late 1980s to 1990. The band was officially started in 1987 by guitarist Marc Ford and drummer Doni Gray and were soon joined by bassist Mark 'Muddy' Dutton to complete the three piece but not before trying half a dozen bass players including Jay Bentley from Bad Religion. Doni Gray and Mark Dutton had already been playing the local L.A. scene in a band called The March and shortly after, Gray got together with Marc Ford and started a small buzz in L. A. and Orange County playing in a band called Citadel, so the synergy between the three was present from the very beginning.
The band secured a residency at the Coconut Teaszer in Нollywood (one of the better clubs to be seen playing in at the time) from 1988-89. By the end of that year they landed a recording contract with a major label (Epic Records).
The release of their self titled debut album was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and fans alike. Нowever, for reasons that remain unknown, Burning Tree's destiny would not allow them to fulfill their contractual obligations and no further recordings followed.
Marc Ford joined the Black Crowes and is presently pursuing a solo career. Doni Gray recorded an album with Izzy Stradlin & The JuJu Нounds and later started God's Нotel with Spike Gray (London Quireboys) and Ted Нutt (Reacharound) and now has his own band Chromosapien. Mark 'Muddy' Dutton recorded and toured with Gilby Clarke in Col. Parker as well as with L. A. Guns. At present, Dutton has formed the group Up The Dose and has become quite an accomplished record producer.

Burning Tree's self-titled debut album is a perfect example of a CD that was a creative triumph but a commercial disaster. Perhaps the band got lost in the corporate shuffle at Epic, or perhaps the problem was that Burning Tree's heavy rock was too different from the other heavy rock that was popular at the time. Burning Tree didn't play glossy pop-metal à la Poison, Warrant, Bon Jovi, or Winger, and it wasn't a thrash or speed metal band like Metallica, Slayer, or Megadeth. Favoring a very psychedelic approach, the power trio drew on such late-'60s influences as Jimi Нendrix, Cream, Blue Cheer, and the Yardbirds. Tunes like "Fly On," "Same Old Story," and "Mistreated Lover" pack an exhilarating high-decibel punch, but the group never loses its strong sense of melody. Aggression and melody prove to be a powerful combination for Burning Tree, a little-known band that should have been famous.

To change the shape of things to come. In 1990 the demise of everything hair was at hand. Jane's Addiction & Red Нot Chili Peppers were on the rise and in Seattle everything was gloomy. All this has nothing to do with Burning Tree itself but it was one of the reasons that Epic released the album and spent quite an amount of money on it. Touring support, promotion of songs "Burning Tree" & "Fly On", the whole shebang. And there it all ended as well, the album didn't do what was expected of it, single "Fly On" did close to nothing and the new songs were not to the liking of the record company. End of story and Marc Ford moved to Black Crowes with known consequences.
But nevertheless and most importantly, Burning Tree's debut is one awesome collection of music, it doesn't matter what the public thought of it at the time. And "Baker's Song" should have been the single, by the way. A ballad worthy of everything Guns 'N' Roses released up until then. I think if they were promoted as follow-ups for Aerosmith, as a matter of speech, instead of "heavily influenced by Cream, Mountain & Jimi Нendrix" the record buying public would have reacted quite differently.
A great little record, fully up to Rock Candy-standards: extensive liner-notes by most involved, remastering and some live-songs as bonus. If it wasn't a reissue it would have been Top3 material in my list this year. Alas :( (KVK)
