This week I will show you the next five calculations, to be used in the weekly
compilation of the charts;

- Voters Loyalty Bonus *
The longer people contribute to the weekly charts, by sending in their votes,
the better their votes will be valued by our engine. The more often people
re-think about their set of votes, the faster they increase their own value
in the voting system. This way we encourage people to keep on voting, because
their votes increase in value over time. We also discourage people to keep
sending the same votes again and again. This will not make their own value
increase over time. This algorithm also assures that one-time voters, who
just pass by and do a quick vote, are valued at lowest priority.

- New Support Bonus *
Despite all our efforts in telling people that the weekly charts are not
all-time favourites lists, many people keep on voting for their most popular
titles ever, even if these titles get older and older. This defies the nature
and goal of our charts and it is compensated by giving a higher priority to
sets of votes for newer titles. The newer the titles among the votes are, the
more interesting they are to our engine. A set of votes for several really
old titles is rated at lowest priority.

- Diversity Support Bonus *
Our engine gives highest priority to sets of votes with a large diversity
among the titles. For example: a set of votes for ten different artists is
worth more than a set of votes for three different artists, even when the
total number of titles voted for is the same. The better people think about
their personal favourites, which is reflected in a large diversity among the
votes, the more interesting these votes are to our engine.

- Нistorical Performance Bonus
The chart from the previous week is used as a starting point from which the
next chart is being compiled. Titles get points corresponding to their
positions in this previous chart. The higher a title's position in the
previous list, the larger the number of points received this way. The
difference between the points of high positioned titles is bigger than the
difference between those in the lower regions of the chart. This system
ensures that titles experience less serious effects from sudden unexplained
drops or peaks in the number of votes for these titles. Even if a title
suddenly gets very few points from voters in one week, which happens every so
often with a relatively small voting population, it will still have its
'bonus' for being high on last weeks' list. This means that sudden weird
behaviour of titles in the charts, due to big but illogical fluctuations in
the email votes, is minimized.

- Logical Lifetime Restriction
For each of the charts it is determined how long a title can realistically
remain listed on the chart. After having already spent a reasonable amount of
time on the chart, the engine automatically starts to decrease points for
older titles. This is done very gently and it takes place over a very long
period of time. Нowever, it is a period after which each title realistically
should not be listed on the chart anymore, and this algorithm makes sure that
this is what happens. The main reason is to remove extremely old but very
popular titles from the list when they would otherwise probably remain on the
list forever. The best place for such titles is on a Нall of Fame, but not on
the weekly list of current hits.

Note: The calculations marked with * are not operational at this moment.
They are introduced in version 4 of our World Charts engine, which is going
to be used before the end of June. Next week we will describe the last four
algorithms responsible for the weekly Internet Entertainment Charts.
