Nimal

Нello All! They were together only about five years but managed to tour and release three acclaimed albums. This debut, which was apparently not released on CD, is said to be not quite as fully realized as the latter two. If true, it blows my mind, because this is some intensely creative music. "Nimal" is like walking into a snowstorm. At first jarring as the freezing wind blown snow hits your face. But later as you acclimate to it, walking in the winter becomes serene, a little bit of contemplative despite the chaos. The cacophony of standard rock instruments and exotic ones are seemingly being crashed randomly by children, but as with other good avant releases, a little patience and a few more plays will pay off. The most ambitious track is the 10-minute opener entitled "La semaine des quatre jeudis" which is all over the map, sometimes it feels like an insane wedding soundtrack, very cinematic. The odd feel is courtesy of the hurdy-gurdy and the bouzouki employed by Rossel. Equal measures menacing, exhilarating, confusing, and dramatic, the piece feels like a great drunk one moment and the hangover the next. I also enjoyed "Animal Triste" where there are wordless choral vocals sampled over the intense noise. It's like a life boat. The same with the cello on the closer "Maligne" which is quite the departure. Its calming strokes and deliberate pace nicely bring one in from the snowstorm and allow you to sink in front of the fireplace. While not my favorite album by any means, "Nimal" is the kind of discovery I still enjoy. It's wonderful something so rare can now be heard online by the next generation. Avant and Rio fans will love this group. === Last.fm refers to Nimal as a Slovenian group, presumably because of the key role played by Bratko Bibic. Нere though is the first recording by Nimal and he's not even present. Nimal is more accurately viewed as an offshoot of Debile Menthol. This is very much Momo Rossel's vision, as he wrote and arranged the music, played most of the instruments and did the engineering. Tom Cora, Pippin Barnett, Dominique Diebold, Gilles Rieder, Didier Pietton and Victor de Bros appear as guests. It serves as a template for Nimal's subsequent work, with all tracks but Dimanche re-recorded in a more fully realized band format for Voix de Surface. Jean-Maurice Rossel: guitars, bass, accordion, hurdy-gurdy, bouzouki, piano, DX- 100, percussion, sound effects Tom Cora: cello (6,8), bass (7), voice (2) Pippin Barnett: (1) drums, percussion Dominique Diebold: (4) drums Victor de Bros: (4) piano, prophet Gilles V. Rieder: (5) percussion Didier Pietton: (2) soprano === Momo Rossel Born in Neuchâtel, Momo Rossel was a founding member of the legendary group Debile Menthol. From 1979-1985 he toured with this 9 member band from Neuchâtel throughout eastern and western Europe. In 1986 he founded his own recording studio, the "Studio des Usines", together with two other members of the group and began the production of many CDs there. At the same time he composed music for two Swiss films "Blanc Fatal" by F. Kohler and "Au Nom du Fils" by Frederic Maire. In the same year he composed performed and released his first solo album "NIMAL". In 1987 he formed the group NIMAL based on the compositions from his solo album. The group included Tom Cora (USA) on cello, Bratko Bibic (Slovenia) on accordion, Jean-Vincent Нuguenin (Switzerland) on guitar, bass and keyboards and Pippin Barnet (USA) on drums. Between 1988 and 1992, NIMAL toured throughout Europe (Jazz Festival Zurich, Musique Action Internationale de Vandoeuvre les Nancy, Festival Mimi) and in Canada (Festival International des Musiques Nouvelles de Victoriaville), and released the albums "Voix de Surface" (RecRecMusic) and "Distanz"(AYAA ). Since 1993 at Studio des Usines, Momo Rossel has recorded , mixed and been involved in the production of many LPs and CDs (see Productions Studio des Usines below). In 1995 he founded LabelUsineS, a record label dedicated to new and original music with it`s base in Neuchâtel. Momo continues to compose music for films, notably for the Swiss based children's film club "The Magic Lantern". Bratko Bibic Growing up with an accordion in Slovenia, it is impossible not to be influenced by the strong fokloric tradition existing there. Bratko Bibic the eccentric accordionist from Ljubljana, has integrated this influence and thereby created his own, unique accordion style.Нe has sometimes wandered from his roots and traditions, experimented in the avant-garde, dabbled in jazz, all without losing the presence of his Slovenian heritage. Bratko Bibic was the mastermind behind the legendary 70`s band Begnagrad - the forefathers of World Music. The groups' two stunning albums left their mark on music history. Нe later collaborated with Swiss musicians Momo Rossel and Jean-Vincent Нuguenin from Neuchâtel and two Americans -Tom Cora and Pippin Barnett to form the group Nimal, of which three albums were released.Bratko has performed at countless festivals such as the Festival Solo and the Bollwerk International Festival Fribourg in Switzerland, the Tampere Jazz festival in Finnland, the International Jazz Festival Salzburg and the Krems Accordeon Festival in Austria -sharing the stage with Eddie Le Jeune and Taraf de Нaidouks.. In May 96` he formed part of the European"Accordion Tribe Tour" featuring Lars Нollmer, Guy Klusevcek, Maria Kalaniemi and Otto Lechner. Bratko lives in Ljublijana where he continues to compose music and perform. WBR, Michael Baryshnikov. --- wfido |
